A Mosaic of Fragility

Having been described by friends, family members, and therapists as highly empathetic, I have taken a strong interest in researching the neurological basis of empathy. In particular, I am aware of the role of mirror neurons, which enable individuals to internalize and replicate the emotions of others. Individuals with heightened empathy often possess a greater sensitivity to these neural responses. While this capacity is commonly viewed as a strength, it has also been emotionally overwhelming for me. This internal conflict informed the conceptual direction of the piece. I drew inspiration from the porcelain doll character in Oz the Great and Powerful, whose fractured form deeply impacted me during childhood. She represented beauty damaged by a world driven by cruelty and power, a symbolism that closely aligns with my own self-perception in this work.
